Explanations

General

The visible satellite image shows the clouds as they are observed by the METEOSAT weather satellite from its geostationary orbit. All clouds, including contrails (but also snow), appear in various shades of white. The resolution of the satellite image is at approx. 1.5 km² (at 50°N). Smaller structures (e.g. cumulus clouds) can be recognised as grey values, especially when the images are played back as an animation.

The visible satellite image is generated during the day only, as the sensor on the METEOSAT measures the reflection of the sunlight.

Basis for data

12 channels of the METEOSAT satellite, including visible channel, IR and water vapour
