General
Areas of rain are clearly depicted by weather radar. Several ground-based radars measure the proportion of backscattered radiation that was emitted shortly beforehand. The intensity of this proportion is a measure of the precipitation intensity. Unfortunately radars also measure other things, such as fixed echoes, for example due to wind turbines (frequently occurring static "objects" in the image), aeronautical and maritime radar and other physical (military chaff) and biological backscatter (flocks of birds).
